A blog about Warhammer 40K, and my favorite defenders of the Imperium the Imperial Guard. From tactics to painting, to just plain fluff. This is my take on the wonderful hobby that is 40K.

Astra Militarum Tactics: Fighting Necrons
This is going to be an initial overview of how to deal with necrons. Not going to be in depth as I haven't played against the new army yet nor poured over the codex for a long while. But there are definite things you are going to face and need to deal with as IG
Wraiths are still a thing and better than ever. Expect them as part of the canoptic harvest, giving them reanimation protocols(RP). They are fast and can move through terrain, T5 now with s 3++. That being said, massed fire will bring them down. As well as S10 weapons. Manticores in general are great anti necron weapons, a good portion of their army has 4+ armor save, and S10 is great for anything. This will double out their T, so that you will kill one when if fails its saves. Key with wraiths is to try and hit them hard early, and mop them up as they get close. Massed small arms fire can deal with them once whittle down.
Manticores really are great for fighting necrons. With quatnum sheilding you really want to get that pen early. So with manitcores large blast/s depending on how you roll, you can cover a group of necron vehicles and strip their quatnum shielding relatively easily with S10 and ordnance. Plus they will do great work agianst necron infantry.
Wyverns are great, don't need to go too much into this. Point them at units, like wraiths, or anything with a T save thats in cover and erase, rinse repeat. How I would use them is my secon layer of fire support. Manticore has the outer ring with its range, with wyverns dealing with targets that get closser, giving you layered supporting fire to continually hurt tragets without having a single unit having to focus on the target the entire game.
Triarch stalkers are awesome, expect them and destroyer lords to be in a combo unit together. Hit the triarch stalker first, its not terribly hard to kill, but focus some of your early fire on it first. Use other fire, like wyverns, to destroy/cripple the unit that the stalker and lord as supporting.
Necron air is not going to be as big, as few night scythes will still be common, but large formations will be rare. They are flyers, have a plan to deal with them just like other flyers. Vendettas are great help, as long as you can get the drop.
Leman russ eradicators are a good choice to fight necrons, as they can kill warriors with little problem, with ap4 and ignores cover. With necrons, they are going to rely on layered saves, so remove as many of those saves as you can, whether it s ignores cover, ap, or instant death, do what you can to ensure they have less chance of surviving.
Crypteks definitely going to be seen. Kill them if at all possible, focus fire, us barrage, whatever you can to kill them. The precision shot order on a boat load of lasguns can do the trick.
As I said earlier this isn't meant to be the compendium for anti-necron tactics, but its a good starting point to let you know some of the tools you need and what are the biggest threats you'll be facing.

I mostly agree with the points you mentioned, manticores and wyverns will be great to deal with warriors/vehicles/wraith, but something like immortals, lychguard/praetorians and now awesome tomb blades will be difficult to deal with using only those artillery pieces. All of those have T5 and a 3+ armor.
ReplyDeleteSecondly I don't think a lot of people will be running destroyer lords (but I do see stalkers being used). Main reason for that is that 110 points for preffered enemy to a squad (or 130 if you want a warscythe as well.) I personally would take 9 more warriors any time over a destroyer lord.
And also if people will use the decurion detachment they will not need crypteks to get a 4+ reanimation protocols. As that detachment command benefit is to give everyone within it +1 RP...
DeleteStill, Crypteks can help buffer the Instant Death that he's talking about as well. While RP can't get better than 4+, anything ID reduces the RP save by one. So if they're running Decurion WITH a Cryptek then it can still get that 4+ on a RP save even if it's ID. So if there's one nearby those pesky Wraiths, it will definitely be worth trying to take the Cryptek out before you shoot at the Wraiths...
DeleteYeah i am aware of that, but i still don't think people will often take a 65 point model to just buff one squad (normal Crypteks give the +1 bonus to the unit they are joining only, so to get several buffed units you would need several of them).
DeleteAlternatively you could take Illuminor Szeras (a named Cryptek) who gives the same buff but to any unit within 6" of him. But he is 110 points so he may or may not be useful, depending on how much infantry you take.
And i don't think that wraith will ever be close enough to him or in a same unit as a cryptek to get that buff. Their whole advantage of speed gets lost then... Well maybe on a first turn and still unlikely.
Played a 1500 game of scions + night paladin vs necrons. I was decimated by his wraiths, who were enjoying their unvulni + reanimation. (These newer codexes have been giving really good formations it would seem)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if throwing a Stormsword and several Imperial Knights with their Destroyer weapons would help against those evil Wraiths and their reanimation protocols.
ReplyDeleteI guess it would depend on how many 6's you can roll on the D chart and stomp chart :D
DeletePlus shadowsword is pretty expensive for what it can do...
I believe they don't get RP against Str D weapons... so just not rolling a 1 on the chart would still mash them.
DeleteNow, with the basic Necron gun's ability to glance anything to death that puts Stormswords and Knights in their own brand of danger, but I think with their mobility they're still going to be a lot of use against Necrons.
yeah but against 2-5 wraith will get their 3+ invulnerable saves.
DeleteWell you would need A LOT of shots to glance the shadowsword (stormsword is the one with apocalyptic S10 AP1 template) to death. 6*9=54 hits. Which means 81 shots from necron warriors or CC attacks from scarabs...
I have a dream Baneblades Baneblade every were and at the lead is Lord Creed and when the Necrons get mad that 3 Baneblades just came out of a small rabbit hole Creed shouts YOU MAD BRO HA YOU MAD BRO YOLO. when the large mushroom cloud settles he simply put his cigar back in his mouth a said's tactical genius hurr
ReplyDeleteWould the new Assassins be of use against Necrons?
ReplyDeleteVindicare could be useful for popping special characters. Most would do ok, but not sure how well they would really do, would def need some playtesting.
DeleteJust played a 1500 verse necrons. They are crazy frustrating with they're innumerable saves, and then rerolls off All their failed saves.
ReplyDeleteThe New codex for necrons is allot of very good formations. Vets with camo are awesome. Snare mines are amazing! Amazing!
Any necron , take pask punishers. A squad of three are very important. No matter what you shoot with, they will get saves. Only volume matters. That's what I learned anyway.
