New Skitarii

So the next models are leaked, another dual kit and these guys are CC specialists.  Don't have full rules yet, but initial thought is that they should be ok.  The rust stalkers and sicarian infiltrators are the two units, both though are CC focused.

Since no real good unit rules leaks have come yet, what has been rumored is both are 2 wounds with increased stats, though not confirmed if toughness is 4.  Their armor gives them a 4+ and 6++, plus they have FnP.  The infiltrators have, surprise, infiltrate and stealth and have cc weapons and pistol options, one of which is a S2 5 shot Shred gun, which is not as bad as it sounds.

The transonic weapons sound pretty darn good, on the first round of combat they auto wound on to wound roll of 6 and AP 2, subsequent rounds they are always ap2.  The ruststalkers only have grenades for shooting, which are haywire and always wound on a 4, so not horrible.

Overall will have to see the whole package, but the weapons all look to be good and as long as they are not too expensive, they should be quite viable.  They both do have the dunstrider rule, making them extremely fast infantry.

weapons are gear pics below.

Again I am surprised at how good this release is looking, nothing is really a stinker and unless the above are way to pricey, they look to be quite good cc units with pluses and minuses to each to give you reason to take one over the other.

  1. These kits...are going to give us so many awesome bits to kit bash with...i can't even take it. My brain is exploding with ideas.

  2. Not really interested in close combat units, given how my Imperial Knights already fill that role. The question is whether I should field a small contingent of Skitarii with my 3 Imperial Knights, or if I should build a bigger contingent of Skitarii alongside 2 Imperial Knights.

  3. Sorry, my comment got replicated for some reason. Weird, I didn't click on the Publish button twice.

Anyway, have you heard anything about the Onager Dunewalker? And would you advise against upgrading a squadron of six Iron-striders to Cognis Lascannon? Or would the Cognis Autocannon be better? Thanks.

    1. No prob, it happens. I haven't heard anything rules wise on it.

I would advise against a full upgrade, autocannons will solve most problems. A small squadron with lascannons isn't bad

    2. Upgrading the full squadron would be pricey, but the autocannon version is cheap. As the autocannon and lascannon have the same targets, you could upgrade one or two of each squadron to lascannons. With correct positioning, the cheap autocannons die first, and the lascannon can fire until the entire squadron is destroyed.

    3. agreed, one or two will do in a larger squadron, gives extra punch without breaking the bank

  4. GG, I've been coming to your site for a year and i always find your reviews interesting and reliable.
That said, what do you think is the down side to the skitarii?
I mean you made it sound like they are better and cheaper than scions. As an IG player i just find it hard to be remotely competitive in games. Sure the first round of shooting and barrage from ig hurts but any competent opponent pushes through and mops you up in melee. I personally just see skitarii as another army that can shoot and cc better than ig. It's frustrating.

    1. Then play differently. Massive amounts of men. Double the number of units as your enemy. You'll have 20 guardsmen to his 5 kitted out space marines. Swarm them, slow them, get 5 heavy weapons to his one large heavy support. And still bring heavy support.
Guard rock, CC can be used properly. Priest commissar and platoon will work very well, but just shoot them already.

    2. Use recruits with priest (CC) or commissar (ranged -> higher LD for orders), by simply being so extremely cheap and fearless, they will always kill or block their points value. Spam autocannons, also Wyverns and Leman Russ will make short work of footsloggers.

As for the skitarii, upside would be more flexibility and some useful rules, downside would be more expensive per model while still only being T3 4+. They'll get massacred by heavy bolters, and the vehicles are below the resilience of even a chimera, let alone Leman Russ.

    3. My main advice, don't castle! This is a tactic a lot of IG like to use but it leads to your problems. To much of your army is essentially a nut just waiting to be cracked. If you can keep the enemy at bay your fine, but as soon as they crack your shell, they are in and your done. Play in depth, use conscripts and other units to engage and slow the enemy down across the field.

    4. Oh and right now, main weakness of Skitarii is no transport. WHich isn't so bad as only one squad (vanguards) really needs one. The cc guys are quick with dunestrider and the walkers are as well. The rangers want to sit back and snipe anyways.

    5. GG do you think that the arquebuses are worth it? i am having a hard time justifying them as much as any other sniper rifle, because it wounds on 4+ and is only one shot and armourbane with S4 is also kind of weak. But i noticed you mentioned it several times, could you say why you think it's good?

    6. Unlike most sniper rifles, they have a good AP. They have an excellent range. Armorbane for S4 is still good, you'll still average a 6, giving you glance on ten. Plus the additional sniper rules. Its one of the best sniper rifles in the game, so I think it has it's def uses, but its by no means a must take.
Its more flexible than the other special weapons and with the rangers, these guys want to sit back more than get up close, so it compliments them well. But don't feel you have to take it. Im going to try it out and see how it goes. Just don't think of it as a dedicated anti tank, but something that can reliably hurt most things.

So yeah they are T3 sadly, but they have dunestrider rule, so they are almost as fast as beasts are...
Also the 5-shot gun is a pistol, so they will get the extra attack for having a pistol and a taser maul... That is a lot of attacks. with 2 attacks base (and 3 for a prime) and 2 weapons and charge, it is 21 S6 attacks on the charge that can generate more attacks on 6s due to taser maul for just the 5 of them...
