Tempestus Scions Tactics: Base 1000pt list

Switching gears back to scions.  Trust me though, this is related to skitarii.  For me, I am going to be combining skitarii and scions to form my army.  One thing is that this keeps it cheap, as I don't need a full on skitarii army, just enough to work with the scions.  This is also though a good starting point for a scion army base for you build off of.  Limiting to 1000pts as this still leaves enough room to use this as a second detachment, or allies.

Core here will be two command squads, simply for orders and special weapons.  For this, one squad is all melta and one all hot shot volley guns.  This gives you anti tank and anti infantry.  You can do plasma as well, but I recommend going with volley first and after you got your core built, then decide if the plasma command squad is worth it.

For troops, three scion squads, this gives you a good base of fire and troops to run around snatching objectives.  Here, two squads take plasma, and one goes melta.  The plasma squads I would go full ten man squads, where as the melta squad can stay at 5 man size.  The five man squad can deep strike with the melta command squad or catch a ride.  At this point, you have about 330 pts left, the rest are going into tauroxes and additional gear.

With remaining pts, you get 4 tauroxes, which I would go with 3 standards with battle cannon and twin linked autocannon and 1 with gatling and hot shot volley.  This gives you a good anti infantry vehicle and the rest are all rounders.  This leaves you ten pts left, which you can spend to upgrade a vehicle or two with storm bolters or heavy stubbers, I would give the gatling taurox the stubber.

Its important to note that tauroxes are FA choices, and I would make max use of them here, that way you have no issues when deciding which unit wants a ride and which one is going to be hoofing it.

Here is how the list should look

HQ
Command squad 4x Volley guns
Command squad 4x melta guns - Taurox w/gatling, TL volley guns, heavy stubber, recovery gear

Troops

5x Scion squad with 2x melta guns
10x Scion squad with 2x plasma guns
10x Scion squad with 2x plasma guns

Fast Attack
Taurox with battle cannon and TL autocannons
Taurox with battle cannon and TL autocannons
Taurox with battle cannon and TL autocannons

Here is a basic 1000pt list that will serve well at that level on its own and acts as a base for higher pt levels and can tie in with other armies.  Its mobile and only one unit is without a transport.  Not a big deal as the 5 man melta squad can deep strike and probably should be doing this most times.  The taurox as DT is just how I would do it, so feel free to switch it around if you know your going to be deep striking the command melta squad more often.

Overall this will tie in very well with IG and Skitarii, both can provide AA and long range anti tank, which scions hurt for.  Personally I see the Skitarii filling the scions weaknesses better than IG, as other than artillery, skitarii have better options for pts to do the job.  Skitarii have units that can also keep up to put the pressure on with scions.

Hope this helps.  I was requested to do a post on this so hopefully I met the intent.

  1. While I can see why you decided to put the Taurox into the FA slot, remember that making them dedicated to troop squads means they gain Objective secured. Consider moving two of them over to the plasma squads, since they'll probably be there anyway.

    1. Obsec is good, but also remember the FA slot gives them the ability to be transports for allies like skitarii. If I buffed this up to a larger list of just scions, a few more squads would have DTs

  2. Whilst I do agree with the Objective secured bit having them in fast attack helps with the ally intention one of the problems with Skitarii is no transports this counteracts this the Skitarii bring the anti tank and air the Scions the speed

  3. Great write up! Nice to see some more articles about the Militarium Tempestus :) One questions, why no taurox with missles? I see that you took all (except one) with battle cannons.

    1. At this pt level, the missiles are just not worth it. The battle cannon will do the job, and the two melta squads can take care of the heavy armor.

  4. Great article, it looks like a solid start to a great combined skitarii/scions force, I like the composition, but I am curious, would the ground assault formation also work well in this instance? The units would be nearly the same (add a commissar) you lose the second command squad, but you gain the advantages of the formation every time you disembark. Twinlinked and Pinning seems like it would make up for lack of second command squad issuing orders. Curious to get your thoughts, I really want to find a synergistic combination between skitarii and scions

    1. Both are good options, I prefer having the extra order personally. But the ground assault is a good choice esp for an ally option.

    2. I will be testing the ground assault formation later this month as an ally option. Unfortunately, they get really expensive for an allied force, especially if I am upgrading the tauroxes and adding extra troopers to the squads.

  5. I'm not a fan of the 10 man squads unless a ing them as a gun line, also find hot shot vollys hard to use. I play on tables with a fair amount of cover so trying to get the full 16 shots of quite hard. I like the idea of a vanguard squad of 3 arc rifles in a taurox.for AT. One tactic I've found works is a comand squad in a bunker with a coms relay and a few squads in tauroxs acting as scouts, the rest of the army is in reserve and acts as the cav to apply pressure where needed in overwhelming force.

    1. I've done a few similar things, only problem I have had is that it either works really well or fails miserably. I like ten man squads, but often a five man will do the job fine. I like a few rifle squads though as my base for the rest of the army.

  6. I just have yet to have it do enough to warrant taking over a gun. If the squad could be buffed to full size, but 5 man squads are pretty easily killed if your opponent wants them dead. But I'll admit I haven't play tested it enough.
