Holiday Progress: New Fortications for IG & Painted Models

Happy holidays everyone!  I hope you all had a good week, whether or not you celebrate any of the holidays or not.  I had a great time with family and it was refreshing to get away from blogging a 40k in general for a week.  It was good to relax and not worry about getting things painted or preparing for the next game.  But now back to the hobby and I am certainly happy.  I got what I was hoping for and that was a significant portion of the Wall of Martyrs with two trench sections and one heavy weapon section.  I also have the bunker on order so I should have that before the end of the week.

These were quick to assemble as they come pretty much complete except for the little eagle shield faces that go on front of the trenches.  Its probably there to just make you feel like you are actually building something but that's ok.  Now these are huge, I assembled these and put them together, you can cover a large portion of the battlefield with these and have good portion of your army in a nice piece of cover.

You probably won't need this much, but if you take the base wall of martyrs you can do a lot with one bunker, trench, and defense emplacement.  I will be adding this to my guard and see how this goes.  I like this a lot in theory and having stubborn for being inside is a great bonus.  It is a little more expensive than an aegis, but it gives you more protection.  I also have been working on my Bastion. Have got it almost finished, just need a final coat and touch up and it will be good for battle.

The main idea was to have it match my aegis defense lines color scheme so that is what I went with.  I have a few more touch up to do and then I have the other extra defense line sections and a quad and Icarus gun to do as well.  Will be good to knock a few more things off the list this week so hopefully it will get done.

Now my brother was also busy over the week working on our Soul Drinkers.  He has finished sarpedon, Iktinos, a tactical squad, a combat squad, and a few other random marines.  Here they are.

The one holding the standard is supposed to be Sgt Graevus.  The overall theme of the army is going to be a rapid in your face assault force, a mix of drop pods and air power to get in quickly and also to be supported by psykers as well.  The main CT is going to be the Sentinels of Terra as the close order drill will benefit the drop pod tactics the best.

As you can see, this army is not finished yet, but is coming along nicely.  Drop pods are in the que and will probably have a few good games in the next month or so if the pace of modeling and painting continues.

Sorry that there is not a whole lot of IG in this post, but its mostly a hobby post since that is what I have been up too lately.  More tactics and thoughts will follow and I plan on this being a busy week so keep your eyes and ears ready.

There are some rumored leaked pics of plastic steal legion over on faeit.  I'm not so sure that those are real, five guys are a little small.  However I do still think it is highly likely that they will be getting a plastic range, or someone will.  My bet is on steel legion, but mordian Iron guard has been kicked around as well so we will see.  Expect more as the month goes on after tyranids are released (I am excited to see).

Have a good day and as always thoughts and comments are welcome and if you have any pics of your own models that you think deserve some sharing, feel free to send them my way.

  1. The steel legion looks like they have just repackaged the metal ones. Probably a special edition box set or they are doing something like they did with the Vostroyan Firstborn Boxes.

Thats what the image looks like anyways.

    1. Either that or just a photoshopped fake. Idk, we will see, if it was a new box I would expect to see 10 guardsmen on the front, not just a couple.

    2. How many models do you think can fit in the wall of martyrs?

    3. That full section could comfortably fit 60ish guardsmen if you wanted to.

  2. I agree that the models do not look right. A couple of them look out of scale, so if I had to say, it looks like a hoax.

Wall of martyrs looks good, a lot bigger than I thought it would be though. Any chance of a few pics with models in for scale?

What do you think of the 7th ed. rumours?

    1. I'll work in a scale pic.

I think both the steel legion and 7th rumors are a hoax. The box looks all wrong. Though I do think they will be getting something, that specific kit is a fake. The whole 7th edition thing, I would but a huge jar of salt on that, it is most likely a collectors edition rule set which is being mistaken as a new edition, that is my thought on it.

  3. The Steel Legion pics are 99% fake.
Except for the fact that they are identical to the current ones:

The SL guys on the box are left handed. All of them.
Not even one other model shoots left-handed, so it's obviously mirrored.

There are some newer rumors on Faeit, about a Heresy-era tank, dogfighter, basilisk and stormtroopers/veterans.
Those would fit nicely with the current trends, and the current basilisk is harder to get at Non-GW stores, with neutral packing (only used when low stock), so that is nearly certain.
I'm personally most interested in the veteran box, as it will give many options to customize my footsloggers.

    1. Yeah I just saw those. The rumor isn't really new, its more of a reconfirmation of the rumors he had a few months ago. I would have said before escalation that a small super heavy would be a no go, but now I can see that as a likely possibility (honestly I want a salamander more than a big tank). New basilisk kit would be great, esp if it includes the other artillery.

Yeah new veterans/storm troopers, talk about finally. The one thing I am most excited about is this.

    2. Yeah, a Salamander would be one of my top wishes.
FW has some good rules for them, just add a transport capacity of 6, and it would be awesome.
Combined with a model for Ciaphas Cain and Jurgen, and it would be the funniest thing to happen this edition.

In terms of superheavy...I'm interested in how the tanks will be priced.
A Leman Russ costs as much as a Riptide, yet is much more fragile and limited (with ordnance FAQ).
If they add an even bigger tank, the price would have to go even higher, and the AP1 damage table would see them destroyed just as quick...

    3. That would be amazing, thus it will not happen :(. A salamander with a small transport capacity would be just amazing, especially if the rumors of small vet squads come true.

Very true, which is the main reason I don't want another "big" tank. A vulture gunship would be a great addition though, has a lot of good options and rules and would fit well with the already existing valkyrie. I really hope they don't pull a new air vehicle out of their ass, but it really would not surprise me.

  4. vultures would be excellent, and your right would fit well. If they do bring out a new tank they need to fix the heavy rule for the russ and drop the points.
I'm not sure on the salamander, I personally don't see it being useful unless its very cheap. Low armour and open top will see it wiped out far to easily to be very effective. Plus I think 5 man vet squads will prove to fragile especially with only two special weapons. I could be wrong but that's my feelings.

    1. Vulture would be awesome, but I don't think they copy newer Forgeworld stuff, especially as the Imperial Navy has lots and lots of vehicles to choose from.
The Thunderbolt would be the iconic choice, but the rumors indicate it to be something new.

In case of the Salamander as transport, the way Forgeworld made them (open-topped, fast, scout chimera for ~60p) would be pretty awesome with transport capacity, especially with a vet squad of 5 or 6.
Scout would give it the ability to outflank, and open-topped would mean the vets could actually shoot their stuff while driving and use their doctrine meltabombs without footslogging for a round.

I'm currently using the LandSpeeder Storm (Special Forces jeep) with a SM scout squad (even more fragile), and it's always worth their points.
Flank in and shoot some vulnerable unit, next turn disembark, shoot, assault, then embark, zoom off, and repeat.
The trick is to choose the right place to show up.
For example burn down dozens of cultists who could never hurt you, or focus on a unit that HAS TO attack something different anyway.
For example, the last games against Necrons and assaulting SM, I always flamered and blinded marines/warriors from up close. They never shot at it, they never tried to assault it, as they had more pressing targets they needed to kill (or get into CC with), or be killed by them.
Once that pressing matter disappears, so should your fast vehicle, but that's why it is fast.
In the 5 games I used it in, it only died once to a chaos biker lord, except for that it only ever lost a hull point.
Being open-topped AV10 with only 2 hull points, fragility doesn't seem to be the problem.

    2. I'm still not sure about the salamander, I'll see what the rules say when they come out and play a few games but I'm still not convinced about it. Land speeders have some advantages that the salamander doesn't, skimmer etc, but yeah, there are defiantly ways to make it work.

I would like the vulture, but your right they don't like pinching FW models which is a shame, it would make life a lot easier and things would fit, it wouldn't take much to change the valk model to the vulture.

    3. A fast open topped transport is nothing to sneeze at, especially with vets with meltas and a demo charge coming out of it. Yeah 6 won't have durability, but they don't need too, they run up blow shit up, charge in and either survive or die. Either way they do their job.
